What Is Black Obsidian?
Black obsidian is a common black gemstone, also known as “Dragon Crystal” and “Tokachi Stone”. Black obsidian is a natural colored glaze formed after the magma flowing out of volcanic lava suddenly cooled. Black obsidian is an amorphous gemstone with two main components-Silicon oxide (SiO2). Black obsidian can be processed into handicrafts because of the characteristics of glass and the cross-section of a shell-like fracture after being broken. It is very sharp so usually used as cutting tools such as knives and arrows in the ancient stone age. Meanwhile, modern people use obsidian to make surgical scalpels. Today most obsidian jewelry is produced in Central America and North America. Further, Mexico’s national stone is obsidian. Black obsidian is also produced in China, such as in Tibet.
Cultural legend
Black obsidian is called tears of Apache. In Indian legends, a team was in an ambush by the enemy, outnumbered, and annihilated. The bad news came, and the family members’ tears fell on the ground and turned into small black stones, also called as gems that no longer weep.Whoever would never weep once he owned this black stone, because the Apache girl had shed all the tears for you and gave the obsidian to the person she liked. The Apache girl wished him to no longer cry and be happy.
